Germany

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a federal parliamentary republic in western-central Europe. It includes 16 constituent states and covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi) with a largely temperate seasonal climate. Its capital and largest city is Berlin. With 81 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state in the European Union. After the United States, it is the second most popular migration destination in the world. Languages German is the official and predominant spoken language in Germany. It is one of 24 official and working languages of the European Union, and one of the three working languages of the European Commission. German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union, with around 100 million native speakers. Religion According to the 2011 German Census, Christianity is the largest religion in Germany, claiming 66.8% of the total population. Generally, 30.8% declared themselves as Roman Catholics; 30.3% as Protestants as represented by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD); 5.7% were reported to part of other Christian denominations (including Protestants outside the EKD). Geographically, Protestantism is concentrated in the northern, central and eastern parts of the country. These are mostly members of the EKD, which encompasses Lutheran, Reformed and unions of both traditions dating back to the Prussian Union of 1817. Roman Catholicism is concentrated in the south and west. People with no or other religions are concentrated in the former East Germany and major metropolitan areas. Islam is the second largest religion in the country. In the 2011 census only 1.9% declared themselves to be Muslims, however other sources estimate 3.8 to 4.3 million adherents (4.6% to 5.2%). Most of the Muslims are Sunnis and Alevites from Turkey, but there are a small number of Shi'ites, Ahmadiyyas and other denominations. German Muslims, a large portion of whom are of Turkish origin, lack full official state recognition of their religious community. Other religions comprising less than one percent of Germany's population are Buddhism with 250,000 and Judaism with around 200,000 adherents (both roughly 0.3%). Hinduism has some 100,000 adherents (0.1%). All other religious communities in Germany have fewer than 50,000 adherents each. Germany has Europe's third largest Jewish population (after France and the United Kingdom). Approximately 50% of the Buddhists in Germany are Asian immigrants.

Salvation Army Responds to Human Trafficking

Modern-day slavery exists. Although it is illegal in Canada, thousands of people every year are being bought and sold. Human trafficking is a hidden evil that The Salvation Army chooses to target. The Salvation Army’s Response The Salvation Army has been involved in anti-human trafficking efforts since 1884 when it first established a “Rescue Home” for women and girls escaping prostitution on the streets of London, England. Within 30 years Salvation Army rescue homes grew from one to 117. Now, more than a century later, The Salvation Army in Canada and abroad is part of a revived movement for the abolition of human trafficking and forms of commercial sexual exploitation. Through raising awareness, policy advocacy, prevention    Read More

Modern Slavery "significant problem" in Northern Ireland

Modern slavery and human trafficking is a "significant problem" in Northern Ireland, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA). Thirty-four victims have been identified and rescued in the past year and 13 suspects have been arrested. The figures were revealed by former PSNI Assistant Chief Constable and NCA vulnerabilities director, Will Kerr. Mr Kerr warned that modern slavery was now so widespread that people would be coming into contact with victims daily. Modern slavery and trafficking 'in every UK town and city' He told the BBC's Evening Extra programme that in Northern Ireland there were 21 live investigations related to human trafficking and slavery. The PSNI created its human trafficking unit early in 2015, a mov    Read More

Human trafficking hotline

Hotline Statistics The National Human Trafficking Hotline maintains one of the most extensive data sets on the issue of human trafficking in the United States. The statistics contained on this website are based on aggregated information learned through signals -- phone calls, emails, and online tip reports -- received by the Hotline. The data do not define the totality of human trafficking or of a trafficking network in any given area. The National Hotline uses this data to help human trafficking victims and survivors and to provide the anti-trafficking field with information to help combat all forms of human trafficking.NATIONAL STATISTICS To protect the identity of the people we serve, the National Hotline does not disclose exact st    Read More
